The North Central Texas Prescribed Burn Association (NCTPBA) was formed in 2008 and is now incorporated. In December, 2011, we became a member of the Texas Alliance of Prescribed Burn Associations (TAPBA), a state-wide association formed in conjunction with the Texas A&M Institute of Renewable Natural Resources, Texas AgriLife Research, and the Texas AgriLife Extension Service.
We advocate prescribed burning as a useful part of rangeland management — a practice that provides advantages not only to property owners, but to local wildlife, livestock, and native habitats.
WHAT IS A "PRESCRIBED BURN"?
A prescribed burn is the application of fire to vegetative fuels in a predetermined area under specified fuel and weather conditions in accordance with a written prescribed plan.
Some of the benefits of prescribed fire are brush and prickly pear control by removing decadent grass growth and overall fuel reduction. In many cases, this is the most cost effective and natural process of range renewal and leads to the most rapid return to a highly productive vegetative state. In addition, the use of prescribed burning is an effective way to manage excess fuel load and reduce the probability and destruction of wildfires. The controlled use of fire has also been shown to be a highly effective means of improving wildlife habitat by reducing litter, enhancing growth of forbs, and balancing cover.
The NCTPBA can provide the tools, training, education and resources to its members to conduct prescribed burns in a safe and effective manner.
YOUR PARTICIPATION IS NEEDED
We need your participation to help inform elected officials, the general public and other landowners about the benefits of safe, well planned prescribed burns.
Our online presence serves as a shared resource for our members, as well as for those eager to learn more about the benefits of prescribed burning. This site also provides information about regional drought conditions, local weather, and public safety offices in the ten counties we serve.
The NCTPBA represents the following ten North Texas Counties...
| • Archer | • Shackelford | • Clay |
| • Throckmorton | • Jack | • Montague |
| • Wichita | • Palo Pinto | • Young |
| • Stephens |
These ten counties had previously been represented by two separate burn associations, but decided in 2008 to combine in order to increase the resources available to their members. This initiative was advanced further in 2011, when the NCTPBA joined the TAPBA.
RESOURCES WE PROVIDE
The NCTPBA takes pride in our advocacy and promotion of the safe, responsible use of prescribed burns to help maintain and improve rangeland in North Central Texas. We invite you to visit this web site often, and welcome your questions and comments.
Now is the time to join this incorporated entity in order to participate and begin a control and renewal process for our range and pasture land. Please print out a copy of the MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION and mail it with your check for $25 (annual) to the NCTPBA, PO Box 165, Henrietta, TX 76365
